Abstract

For determining the optimum size and thickness of polythene bags, four sizes viz. 25 cm × 15 cm, 30 cm × 20 cm, 40 cm × 25 cm and 45 cm × 30 cm with gauges 150, 200 and 250 have been tested for raising nursery of Eucalyptus hybrid. Data on height, collar-diameter and other growth parameters like leaves per plant, length of root and dry weight of entire plant was taken 90, 120, 150 and 180 days after sowing of seeds. The data showed consistent concomitant increase in the growth parameters with increasing size and thickness of polythene bags. On considering the cost and gross return from six year old plantation raised from the seedlings in the bags under test, optimum size and thickness of bag works out to 40 cm × 25 cm with 200 gauge followed by 45 cm × 30 cm with 150 gauge.
