Abstract

The dimensional interrelationship of heartwood and sapwood, in relation to the trunk length of 11 timber trees have been analysed. The trunk length shows positive correlation with the circumference, cross-sectional area of heartwood, and ratio of heartwood area to sapwood area (both at the base and apex of the trunk) in all the taxa investigated. Trunk circumference a1so shows strong positive correlation with cross-section area of heartwood and to the ratio of heartwood area to sapwood area, while, trunk length bears no relation with cross-sectional area of sapwood and also to percentage of heartwood in the cross-sectional area of the wood. The analysis suggest that the increment in length of the trunk results in the increment of heartwood, independent of the sapwood both at the base and apex.
