Abstract

Khijadiya is a wetland having two different types of vegetation, i.e. hydrophytes growing in/around fresh water ponds and halophytes growing in/near intertidal mud flats. A study was conducted on the diversity and community composition of hydrophytes and halophytes in Khijadiya wetland. A total of 12 hydrophytes and 10 halophytes were recorded. The freshwater area was dominated by the emergent hydrophytes like Bolboschoenus maritimus, Fimbrystylis ferruginea and Cyperus difformis whereas the saline habitat was dominated mainly by halophyte (mangrove) species like Avicennia marina. The entire wetland area was endowed with various community groups e.g. Bolboschoenus maritimus - Fimbrystylis ferruginea cyperus difformis community (a freshwater community) and Avicennia marina community (a saline water community).
