Abstract

Gymnema sylvestre (Retz.) R.Br. ex Sm., commonly known as the “Gurmar†or “Sugar destroyerâ€, is a plant of great medicinal importance native to the Indian subcontinent. It is well-known for its potential antidiabetic properties, particularly its ability to reduce sugar cravings and aid in blood sugar regulation. Gymnema species have a rich genetic legacy, which is characterized by a large number of variants that eventually mix genotypes resulting in the production of new ecotypes that are spread throughout diverse geological locations. This study aims to evaluate the genetic variation within the ten ecotypes of G. sylvestre distributed across ten districts of Telangana. G. sylvestre specimens from 8 out of 10 districts, have shown results either having comparable or identical genetic traits, when analysed utilizing DNA barcoding techniques with matK and rbcL loci, followed by multiple sequence alignment and UPGMA methods. Noteworthy is the significant diversity observed in G. Sylvestre NRL and G. Sylvestre VKB, effectively distinguishing them from the remaining ecotypes. This differentiation underscores the distinctive evolutionary profile of Gymnema species within the state of Telangana.
