'Stars' (Asteraceae) of Kalyana Karnataka Region, Karnataka, India

Asteraceae is the largest family of flowering plants and is known as star family (Aster in Greek is star), with about 32000 species distributed all over the world. Kalyana Karnataka is a region located in the northern part of Karnataka state. Intensive field studies were undertaken from September 2022 to August 2024 with the aim of reporting all Asteraceae members of Kalyana Karnataka region. Detailed taxonomic information is presented with updated nomenclature, synonyms, common name, vernacular name, habit and locality. A total of 224 species were collected which were classified under 118 genera. Blumea was the dominant genera with 16 species, followed by Artemisia and Helianthus each with 6 species, Acilepis, Acmella, Cosmos, Emilia, Erigeron, Launaea, Senecio and Sonchus each with 5 species while Bidens and Pluchea each with 4 species and other genera having 3, 2 or 1 species. This is the first report on taxonomic studies of Asteraceae members of Kalyana Karnataka region.
