In the Wake of Flood to the Countryside

Abstract

With the increase in population our hilly regions and catchment areas are increasingly being encroached upon and deforestated. Such an affair is giving a fillip to soil erosion to early inundation of low lying country side which now remains submerged for a longer period under a greater depth of water compared to the conditions that prevailed a generation or two ago, affecting both food and cash crops and orchards and adversely disturbing the village economy and well being of the people which are based mainly on agriculture. A reference has also been made to different items of the associated problems including reforestation, particularly at the river sources, with the double advantages of reducing soil erosion and of bringing the area under forest to the economic minimum.
