Social Security and the Unorganised forest Sector in India

Abstract

India has a large working population in un organised sector. Forestry constitutes one of the segments of the said sector. About three million people work in the forest sector. These forest workers do not have steady employment, and secure or sustainable income. They urgently need social security cover. Of late, the Central and State Government have initiated a few social security measures. However, as things stand today, such measures are woefully inadequate. There is an urgent need to undertake more social security schemes in the unorganised forest sector.
