Abstract

The great strength of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands is in the immensity and pervasive presence of Tropical Rain Forests there. The economy of these islands depends on the develop-ment of forest-based industries. Accordingly, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands Forest and Plantation Development Corporation Limited was created on 21st January 1977. In spite of the initial difficulties, this Corporation laid base for successful field operations in the islands. It has been able to create a regular market for Andaman timbers. The Corporation mainly deals with the scientific harvest and regeneration of forests, based on the principles of sustained yield, causing least disturbance to the local ecosystem in applying the natural regeneration technique of Andaman Canopy Lifting Shelterwood System. It also manages 1,593 hectares of Red Oil Palm and about 600 hectares of Rubber Plantations in the islands which are growing well. Financial analysis of the Corporation shows it to be on sound financial footing. The Corporation enjoy the privilege of being one of the few Public Sector Enterprises in the country making profit right from the year of its formation.
