Abstract

Timber harvesting, an important practical aspect of forestry, has unfortunately not received adequate attention in our country. It is left mostly in the hands of the forest contractors and big forest lessees who often do not care to improve the logging technique. They waste more than 50 per cent, sometimes even up to 70 per cent, of useful standing volume of timber, in their crude and wasteful conventional practices which are still in vogue in various forest operations in the hills, without affecting their huge anticipated profit ! An idea of this wastage of timber at different stages as it moves down from the stump to its final destination in the market has been given in this article.
