Characterization of Chir Pine (<I>Pinus roxburghii</I> Sargent) for Resin Yielding Capacities

Abstract

Resin-yielding capacities of individual trees in each of different provenances, based on resin data recorded for 1957 to 1963, have been studied . Individual trees based on the viscosity values of their resin have been characterised. The study may help in selecting various provenances and trees for tree breeding experiment. Average viscosity values of provenances gradually increase from west to east. There seems to be an indication of presence of two broad strains of the species. The one occupying west of Chakrata and East Almora is superior to the strain found in the remaining part of the natural belt.
