Abstract

In this study, fuel properties (basic density, calorific value, ash content, volatile matter content and fixed carbon content) of important fuel wood species i.e., Casuarina equisetifolia has been investigated. Study on chemical, elemental and gasification characteristics of Casuarina equisetifolia has also been carried out Ash content, volatile matter content and fixed carbon content was found to be 0.6 %, 83.6% and 15.8%, respectively. Higher calorific value (20.29 MJ/kg) was observed in Casuarina equisetifolia wood biomass. Based on experimental results, Casuarina equisetifolia wood was found to be a suitable feedstock for energy conversion through gasification. The emphasis was given to Casuarina equisetifolia because of the fast growing nature of the plant and produce more biomass in short time. Casuarina equisetifolia is one of the important fuel wood trees, which is widely available in coastal zones of India and is accepted to play major role in future bioenergy schemes.
