ABSTRACT:
The Article analyses the policy support to agroforestry by the Govt. of India along with initiatives of the Govt. Karnataka in the past two decades. In today’s context agroforestry hold the enormous potential to ameliorate not only socio-economic conditions of farming community but also in providing the ecological balance, environmental stability and combating the impact of climate change. It is one of the most important components of Integrated Farming System, which can help in adaptation as well as mitigation measures to farmers to have sustainable income. When there is little possibility of increasing the forest cover with in the Recorded Forest Area, this provides unique opportunity in increasing the cover of Trees Outside Forest and thereby meeting the national and international commitments. But to achieve the goals of National Action Plan for Climate Change and of doubling the income of farmers by 2023, agroforestry policies need strong and continued support, both at Centre as well state level. Various issues concerning with it are to be dealt holistically. To complement the National Agroforestry policy, states to have their own liberal and progressive Agroforestry Policy.
