An Appraisal of the Fir Regeneration Problem

Abstract

Fir regeneration problem has been engaging the attention of forests of the northern states for a long time and it is pointed out that little concrete results have been achieved so far. Foresters in general have been feeling shy of taking quick decisions particularly with a view to taking up action on artificial regeneration which seems to be the only possibility of regenerating bulk of the crops in the monsoonic zone of fir and spruce. Brief details of the past trials and works have been stated starting from seed collection, storage, nursery technique, planting etc. The inimical factors have also been brought out. Past management of fir forests have also been brought out. Past management of fir forests has been discussed and guidelines for future attempts at establishing crops artificially have been proposed. It has been particularly stressed that the problem should be viewed from economic angle as well as from the point of view of an Ecologist. There are many difficulties in getting natural regeneration but most of these difficulties can be surmounted if artificial attempts are made. In making artificial attempts, heavier types of fellings than have been practised hitherto have been recommended.
