Studies on Physical and Mechanical Properties of Coconut Wood (<I>Cocos nucifera</I> Linn.)

Abstract

Coconut wood from non-productive plantations is a by-product of an agricultural crop and constitutes a renewable resource which may serve as a complement to, or at least in part. As a substitute for traditional timbers in local markets. It more extensive utilisation is expected to contribute to the conservation of natural forests. On evaluating its physical and mechanical properties, the wood having density more than 0.5 is classified as tough, very hard, very strong and very heavy timber. Based on suitability indices it is found suitable for tool handles (Group I), wood poles (Group II), construction (Group II) specially for roofingand load bearing components and door, window, shutters and frames.
