The paper presents the occurrence of total number of genera and species of bamboos in world and India with brief history of taxonomy. Special emphasis is given to the bamboos of North-east India. Distribution of species in different states has been provided. Thirty one species imperfectly known from the North-east have been mentioned. Status of 7 rare bamboos has also been mentioned.Downloads
